Police Commissioner Launches New Community Initiative

October 15, 2023

Gaborone, Botswana

Police Commissioner launching community initiative

The Commissioner of Police, Ms. Dinah Marathe, has launched a groundbreaking community policing initiative aimed at strengthening partnerships between the police and the public to enhance safety and security across Botswana.

Strengthening Police-Public Partnerships

The new initiative, dubbed "Botho Police-Community Partnership," was officially launched at a ceremony held at the Police Headquarters in Gaborone. The program focuses on creating sustainable structures for collaboration between community members and police officers at all levels.

Commissioner Marathe emphasized that the initiative represents a paradigm shift in policing philosophy, moving from traditional law enforcement to a more collaborative, problem-solving approach.

"Effective policing cannot be achieved by the police alone. It requires the active participation and cooperation of every member of society. This initiative will bridge the gap between the police and the community, fostering mutual trust and shared responsibility for safety and security."
- Commissioner Dinah Marathe

Key Components of the Initiative

The Botho Police-Community Partnership includes several key components designed to facilitate meaningful engagement:

  • Regular community-police forums in all districts
  • Neighborhood watch programs with police support and training
  • School outreach programs to engage youth in crime prevention
  • Digital platforms for reporting concerns and sharing information
  • Joint problem-solving teams addressing specific community issues

Implementation Timeline

The initiative will be rolled out in phases across all districts of Botswana, starting with urban centers and gradually expanding to rural areas. The pilot phase will begin in Gaborone, Francistown, and Maun next month, with full national implementation expected within 18 months.

Community Response

Community leaders who attended the launch expressed strong support for the initiative. Mr. David Modise, a community representative from Old Naledi, stated:

"This is exactly what our communities need. For too long, there has been a disconnect between the police and the people they serve. This initiative will help build trust and make our neighborhoods safer."

Expected Outcomes

The Botswana Police Service expects the initiative to yield several positive outcomes, including:

  • Improved trust and confidence in the police service
  • More effective crime prevention through community intelligence
  • Reduced response times to incidents
  • Lower crime rates in participating communities
  • Enhanced police accountability and transparency

How to Get Involved

Community members interested in participating in the initiative can contact their local police station or visit the Botswana Police Service website for more information. The first community-police forum will be held in Gaborone on November 5, 2023, at the Main Mall Community Hall.
